FCC ISSUES 'WHITE SPACES' DECISION

FCC OPENS NEW AIRWAVES TO THE PUBLIC
(November 5, 2008) Portland, OR - Regulators, siding with techs like Google and Microsoft, rule that "white space" freed up by digital TV is best used for high-speed wireless hot spots. While the country was picking its next President on Nov. 4, the Federal Communications Commission was making its own momentous decision. The country's top communications regulator unanimously voted to free up the biggest ever swath of airwaves to be used by the public for cheap high-speed wireless Internet access. (more)

SHURE RAISES CONCERNS OVER FCC
‘WHITE SPACES’ DECISION
(November 4, 2008) Niles, IL - The Federal Communications Commission today voted to allow technology companies like Google, Microsoft, Dell, and Motorola to produce “white spaces” devices that will use the same radio frequency (RF) spectrum now being used by wireless microphone systems. Final text of the rules is not yet available, but the order is purported to greatly reduce the amount of clear spectrum available for use by professional audio and communications equipment.

The time for action has come. On October 15, the FCC Office of Engineering and Technology released its Report on Tests of Prototype TV White Spaces Devices (ET Docket # 04-186 available at fcc.gov). At the same time, the FCC has announced a tentative agenda for its Nov 4 Open Meeting (yes Election Day).

LEADING WIRELESS MICROPHONE USERS SAY GOOGLE’S PLAN IS NOTHING BUT VAPORWARE
(April 7, 2008) New York, NY - A broad coalition of high-profile wireless microphone users, organized as the Microphone Interests Coalition (MIC), today sharply criticized the recent proposal submitted by Google to open the so-called “white spaces” to unlicensed device use. Google is touting the proposal as a spectrum compromise that eliminates any remaining interference concerns about using personal/portable devices in the unassigned TV channels called white spaces. The Microphone Interests Coalition, however, says the plan is far from a compromise and certainly should not be viewed as a solution for wireless microphones. (more)
